St. John's Wort has been used in European traditional medicine since antiquity for low mood and nervous exhaustion. Its two most studied constituents, hypericin and hyperforin, are associated with serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline reuptake modulation. Clinical reviews of mild to moderate low mood report effect sizes comparable with standard first-line options at 300 mg standardised extract, three times daily. Important: it induces the CYP3A4 liver enzyme, so it can reduce the effect of oral contraceptives, anticoagulants and antiretrovirals. JCMS includes it at a culinary infusion level, not a clinical dose.

Ginseng

Panax ginseng

Korea & north-east China · 6-year roots

The reference adaptogen — ginsenoside-rich root for fatigue and cognition.

Used in: JCMS for Men · JCMS Multi-Purpose

  • Energy & anti-fatigue92%
  • Cognitive support81%
  • Adaptogenic (stress) action90%
  • Clinical study volume89%

Panax ginseng roots are harvested at six years, when ginsenoside content peaks. Ginsenosides Rb1, Rg1 and Rg3 are the principal actives, studied for their influence on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, nitric-oxide mediated circulation and glucose handling. Randomised trials report improvements in subjective fatigue, working-memory speed and physical endurance under stress at 200–400 mg standardised extract daily. It is stimulating rather than sedating, so it is best taken before noon.

Maca Root

Lepidium meyenii

Junín plateau, Peru · 4,000 m altitude

High-altitude Andean root for stamina and hormonal steadiness, caffeine-free.

Used in: JCMS for Men · JCMS for Women

  • Physical endurance86%
  • Hormonal balance support79%
  • Mineral density74%
  • Clinical study volume66%

Maca grows above 4,000 m where few crops survive; the stress of that altitude concentrates its macamides and glucosinolates. Unlike stimulants it contains no caffeine and does not raise heart rate. Trials in adults report improved subjective energy, exercise tolerance and libido after 6–12 weeks at 1.5–3 g of dried root daily, alongside better mood scores in post-menopausal women. It is a cruciferous vegetable, so it is traditionally gelatinised or cooked before use to improve digestibility.

Sesame Seed

Sesamum indicum

Northern Nigeria (Jigawa, Benue) · wild-harvested

Lignan-rich seed supplying calcium, magnesium, zinc and healthy lipids.

Used in: JCMS Multi-Purpose · JCMS for Women

  • Mineral density94%
  • Antioxidant (lignan) content77%
  • Cardiovascular support71%
  • Nutrient absorption aid83%

Sesame is one of the oldest oilseed crops and Nigeria is among the world's largest exporters. Per 100 g it supplies roughly 975 mg calcium, 351 mg magnesium and 7.8 mg zinc, plus the lignans sesamin and sesamolin, which are studied for lipid-profile and blood-pressure support. Around 82% of its fat is unsaturated. In JCMS blends it also carries fat-soluble compounds from the other botanicals, improving their absorption.

Cumin Seed

Cuminum cyminum

Kano trade corridor · sun-dried whole seed

Digestive key — cuminaldehyde activates enzymes and calms gut inflammation.

Used in: JCMS Multi-Purpose · JCMS for Men

  • Digestive & enzyme action91%
  • Anti-inflammatory activity76%
  • Iron content88%
  • Traditional use record93%

Cumin's essential oil is dominated by cuminaldehyde, which stimulates salivary and pancreatic enzyme secretion, shortening gastric emptying time. Controlled trials report reduced bloating and improved symptom scores in irritable bowel syndrome at 20 mg of concentrated essential oil daily, and modest improvements in fasting lipids over eight weeks. It is also a meaningful source of iron. In a blend it makes the other botanicals easier to tolerate on an empty stomach.

Moringa

Moringa oleifera

Oyo State, Nigeria · shade-dried leaf

Complete-protein leaf carrying all nine essential amino acids.

Used in: JCMS Multi-Purpose

  • Vitamin & mineral density96%
  • Protein completeness89%
  • Antioxidant capacity85%
  • Nigerian-sourced100%
Read more

Moringa leaf is one of the few plant foods containing all nine essential amino acids. Dried leaf powder provides roughly 27 g protein, 2,000 mg calcium and 28 mg iron per 100 g, along with quercetin and chlorogenic acid. Shade-drying within 24 hours of harvest preserves up to 70% more vitamin C than sun-drying — the method JCMS requires of its farm partners. Studies report modest reductions in fasting glucose and improvements in antioxidant status with daily use.

Hibiscus (Zobo)

Hibiscus sabdariffa

Kano & Jigawa, Nigeria · dried calyces

Anthocyanin-dense calyx with measurable blood-pressure support.

Used in: JCMS Multi-Purpose · JCMS for Women

  • Cardiovascular support90%
  • Antioxidant capacity93%
  • Vitamin C content82%
  • Nigerian-sourced100%

The deep red calyces owe their colour to anthocyanins, which are also behind their measured effect on circulation. Meta-analyses of controlled trials report average reductions of about 7 mmHg systolic and 3 mmHg diastolic pressure with daily hibiscus infusion over 2–6 weeks. It is naturally caffeine-free and high in vitamin C. Nigeria's northern zobo harvest is among the most anthocyanin-rich in the world because of the dry-season sun.

Ginger Root

Zingiber officinale

Kaduna State, Nigeria · sun-dried rhizome

Gingerol-rich rhizome for digestion, nausea and inflammatory balance.

Used in: JCMS Multi-Purpose · JCMS for Men

  • Digestive & anti-nausea95%
  • Anti-inflammatory activity87%
  • Circulatory warming84%
  • Nigerian-sourced100%

Nigerian ginger is prized for unusually high gingerol and shogaol content, the compounds responsible for its warmth and its pharmacology. Clinical evidence is strongest for nausea — 1 g daily is comparable with standard antiemetics in pregnancy and post-operative settings — with supporting evidence for reduced muscle soreness and lower inflammatory markers. Drying converts gingerol into shogaol, which is more pungent and more strongly anti-inflammatory.
